Mervo boys basketball coach Josh Czerski is back on the move, having accepted the Penn State York men’s basketball coaching position on an interim basis.
Czerski, 36, a 2012 Penn State York graduate who enjoyed a standout four-year playing career there, was in his first season at Mervo after previously coaching at Parkville and Loyola Blakefield. The Mustangs are 7-3 this season with longtime assistant coach Jeff Lordi taking over as head coach.
The chance to take over the program he once played for was to good to pass up for Czerski. Before starting his high school coaching career, he served as an assistant coach at York for eight years.
The Towson Catholic graduate, who replaced former coach Matt Rotonda, ran his first practice on Monday. The Lions take a 12-2 record into Wednesday night’s game against New York-based Berkley College.
“It’s one of those things where I got very, very excited and light on my feet just walking into the athletic facility. It’s just a whole new adventure and we’re getting right to it with a game tonight,” Czerski said Wednesday morning.
York is one of several Penn State branch campuses that will close its doors after the completion on the 2026-27 school year. Czerski is aiming to help the program finish on a high note. Competing in NCAA Division II, the team is 8-0 in the Penn State University Athletic Conference.
“I came in pretty emotional because I loved playing there. I’m looking to stabilize and compete and carry out the next year and a half the right way, trying to win championships,” he said.
Prior to taking over at Mervo, Czerski went a combined 38-32 in his two years at Loyola Blakefield. In six years at Parkville, he went 116-33, winning the Baltimore County championship in the 2021-22 season and claiming the Class 4A state title in the 2022-23 season.
