“But if there is more money going to Ukraine and it looks like he is coming down on the side of getting us involved with Ukraine on their side of the war [with Russia] or on any side of this war, I think you’re going to see all hell break loose,” Paul later said, according to The Hill newspaper.
He said the more Trump gets involved overseas, the more his base will feel abandoned.
“And if all of a sudden, President Trump becomes the president of regime change in Venezuela and giving arms and money to Ukraine, I think a lot of people will feel abandoned,” Paul said.
He suggested that some of the president’s allies such as Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., is more in favor of a regime change in Venezuela, which the MAGA base isn’t a fan of.
It was recently reported that the Trump administration granted the CIA authority to conduct lethal operations in Venezuela. The U.S. military has been taking out alleged “narcoterrorists” on vessels in the Caribbean.
Trump has denied a Wall Street Journal report that U.S. B-1 bombers flew near Venezuela amid the ongoing tension between the two countries. The news outlet reported that two Air Force B-1 bombers flew near Venezuela after conducting an “attack demonstration” close to the country.
“No, that’s not accurate,” Trump said in response to the report, according to Newsweek. “But we’re not happy with Venezuela.”
Trump has been making efforts to try to end the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. He met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy this past week and discussed a proposal to freeze the current front lines of the war while both sides work toward a longer-term peace agreement.
“I think that was a good compromise, but I’m not sure that [Russian President Vladimir] Putin will support it, and I said it to the president,” Zelenskyy said.
The U.S. has been supporting Ukraine financially since the war started in 2022.
Paul has been one Republican who isn’t afraid to go against Trump. Although a supporter of Trump, Paul has disagreed with the president on some key issues. Paul said he was not invited to lunch at the White House with other Republican senators this past week.
