Anne Arundel County championships: Crofton boys, Severna Park girls win cross country titles

Severn Run senior Tre Kelly made history, while Severna Park junior Josephine Kamas went back-to-back at the Anne Arundel County cross country championships held Saturday morning at Annapolis High.
Kelly led from start to finish in capturing the county championship in the varsity boys race with a time of 16 minutes, 4.35 seconds. That was just under 6 seconds faster than runner-up Cole Cosgrove from North County.
It was quite the jump for Kelly, who finished 11th at last year’s county championships. He previously attended Old Mill High and was a teammate of Tsedeke Jakovics, the 2024 county, region and state champ.
“I put in a lot of work over the summer with my peers and training partners and that is what got me to where I am today,” Kelly said. “Tsedeke has been a great mentor; He’s like an older brother and one of the people who pushed me over the summer.”
Kelly is the first county champion — individual or team — in the short history of Severn Run High, which opened in the fall of 2024.
“It feels good knowing that I made history for a new school,” he said.
Kelly set the pace from the outset and led at every mile mark. He entered the Annapolis High stadium well clear of Cosgrove, who wound up finishing just over 15 seconds ahead of third place Ryan Fernandez from Arundel.
“I knew Cole had a great kick, so I had to dictate how the race went early on,” Kelly said. “When I knew I was close to the finish I put my foot in the ground, swung my arms, built as much momentum as I could and finished strong.”
Scott Cunningham placed fourth to lead Crofton, which claimed the team title with a score of 45 points — 22 better than Severna Park. Damola Olawode and Noah Mazza-Bell finished sixth and eighth for the Cardinals, who captured their first county championship in cross country.
It snapped a remarkable run for the Severna Park boys, who had secured 14 straight county championships dating to 2011.
Kamas won the girls race going away, posting a time of 19:36.86 that was almost 20 seconds faster than teammate Lexi Fitzsimmons. It was the second straight county championship for Kamas, who said she waited until the last quarter mile to “put the hammer down.”
“I was surrounded by my teammates most of the way and we set a good pace. I felt good the whole way and was able to finish strong,” Kamas said.
Kathryn Murphy finished fourth, while fellow senior Lila Sandel placed sixth as the Falcons dominated the team standings with 20 points — a whopping 49 less than runner-up Crofton. Sophomore Mari Matthews and senior Valeria Saenz were seventh and eighth.
Severna Park’s girls have now claimed six consecutive county championships.
“It’s amazing and that truly is why I’m so happy,” Kamas said. If I didn’t have my teammates with me it would not mean nearly as much. They carry me through my hardest days.”
Kamas was pleased to repeat as county champ, but even more thrilled that Sandel did so well.
“It feels great, but more important is that I have a teammate who has dealt with so much hard stuff the last couple years,” Kamas said of Sandel. “She went into this with a lot of pressure because it could have been her last race and she showed up and ran an incredible race. That is what makes this such a special day.”
Severna Park now sets its sights on capturing a fourth straight state championship. Kamas placed third individual at the Class 4A meet last year and is hopeful of moving up on the podium.
“On a personal level, being a state champion would be an absolute dream. I just want to give it my all run a good time,” she said.
