Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., is preparing for a 2028 presidential or Senate campaign, according to Axios.
The congresswoman’s team is working to expand her opportunities and has “brought in” former senior advisers to Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Axios reported on Friday citing people familiar with the matter.
On Friday Ocasio-Cortez took to the House floor to explain why she voted against a GOP-backed resolution honoring conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated on Sept. 10, and condemning political violence. She was one of 58 Democrats to vote against it.
“His rhetoric and beliefs were ignorant and sought to disenfranchise millions of Americans — far from ‘working tirelessly to promote unity’ as asserted by the majority in this resolution,” she said about Kirk.
Ocasio-Cortez has traveled across New York and the rest of the country this year to speak out against the Trump administration and her Republican colleagues. During a July event in Plattsburgh, New York, she told attendees of a town hall that “every single Republican at every level of government in the state of New York must be challenged point blank, period.”
“Don’t give anyone an easy walk this year or next. I want Republicans running for dogcatcher to be challenged next year,” she said. “Every single one of them better be tied up, and let ‘em know that we will not forget what they did.
“And they need to know it not just from New York City, but from Plattsburgh and Hudson County and Utica and Buffalo and Rochester and in rural areas, suburban areas and urban areas, too. “That is our task.”
She has been a vocal opponent to the “One Big Beautiful Bill” that reduced spending for some federal programs, and expressed concern over the Trump administration’s policies at events in other states. In the spring, she appeared at multiple demonstrations with Sanders on the national “Fighting Oligarchy” tour.
During a stop in Idaho, Ocasio-Cortez told members of the crowd they didn’t have to live knowing “what it feels like for life to be one bad day, one piece of bad news, one major setback from everything falling apart.”
“We can make a new world, a better country where we can fight for the dignity of all people,” she said. “And that dignity looks like living wages, Idaho. It looks like stable housing. It looks like guaranteed healthcare and respect for all of our differences, no matter who we are or where we come from.”
Republicans have pushed back on the congresswoman’s initiatives. President Donald Trump wrote in a post on social media platform Truth Social in June that Ocasio-Cortez “can’t stand the concept of our Country being successful again.”
“Instead of her constant complaining, Alexandria should go back home to Queens, where I was also brought up, and straighten out her filthy, disgusting, crime ridden streets, in the District she ‘represents,’ and which she never goes to anymore,” Trump said. “She better start worrying about her own Primary, before she thinks about beating our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer, whose career is definitely on very thin ice!”
