NEW YORK — Not even two hours passed after the Orioles placed catcher Adley Rutschman on the injured list before another player got hurt.
Third baseman Jordan Westburg left Saturday’s game against the Yankees with left hand discomfort after drawing a walk and stealing second base in his first at-bat. Westburg, starting in the designated hitter spot, slid into the base with his left hand touching the bag first, though it wasn’t immediately clear whether that caused the injury. Westburg was wearing a sliding mitt on his left hand.
Top infield prospect Coby Mayo pinch hit for Westburg his next time up in the third inning.
Westburg, 26, was playing in just his 11th game since returning from a six-week absence caused by a hamstring injury. He also missed 47 games with a fractured right hand — the opposite hand of what ailed him Saturday — last season and has appeared in 141 of the team’s 238 games (59%) since the start of 2024.
When healthy, he’s been one of the Orioles’ best hitters on the roster. He entered play Saturday slashing .256/.305/.470 with 25 home runs over the past two seasons.
Including Rutschman, the Orioles have placed 21 players on the injured list this season and currently have 10 players on the IL.
