BOSTON — Orioles star catcher Adley Rutschman exited Sunday’s game against the Red Sox after taking a foul ball to the mask.
In the third inning, Red Sox slugger Rafael Devers took a mighty hack and fouled a pitch from Dean Kremer straight back. The ball struck Rutschman directly, causing him to slump to the side and grab his head.
Rutschman remained in the game, catching the remainder of the third and fourth innings. When he was due up to bat in the fifth inning, he was replaced by backup catcher Maverick Handley. The Orioles then announced Rutschman was removed after taking the foul ball to his mask, but the club did not provide an injury designation or say whether he’s in concussion protocol.
The potential injury to Rutschman is the latest in a long line of ailments the Orioles have suffered this season.
